Enriching Knowledge Bases with Counting Quantifiers
Information extraction traditionally focuses on extracting relations between
identifiable entities, such as . Yet, texts
often also contain Counting information, stating that a subject is in a
specific relation with a number of objects, without mentioning the objects
themselves, for example, "California is divided into 58 counties". Such
counting quantifiers can help in a variety of tasks such as query answering or
knowledge base curation, but are neglected by prior work. This paper develops
the first full-fledged system for extracting counting information from text,
called CINEX. We employ distant supervision using fact counts from a knowledge
base as training seeds, and develop novel techniques for dealing with several
challenges: (i) non-maximal training seeds due to the incompleteness of
knowledge bases, (ii) sparse and skewed observations in text sources, and (iii)
high diversity of linguistic patterns. Experiments with five human-evaluated
relations show that CINEX can achieve 60% average precision for extracting
counting information. In a large-scale experiment, we demonstrate the potential
for knowledge base enrichment by applying CINEX to 2,474 frequent relations in
Wikidata. CINEX can assert the existence of 2.5M facts for 110 distinct
relations, which is 28% more than the existing Wikidata facts for these
relations.Comment: 16 pages, The 17th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2018
On the discovery of continuous truth: a semi-supervised approach with partial ground truths
In many applications, the information regarding to the same object can be collected from multiple sources. However, these multi-source data are not reported consistently. In the light of this challenge, truth discovery is emerged to identify truth for each object from multi-source data. Most existing truth discovery methods assume that ground truths are completely unknown, and they focus on the exploration of unsupervised approaches to jointly estimate object truths and source reliabilities. However, in many real world applications, a set of ground truths could be partially available. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised truth discovery framework to estimate continuous object truths. With the help of ground truths, even a small amount, the accuracy of truth discovery can be improved. We formulate the semi-supervised truth discovery problem as an optimization task where object truths and source reliabilities are modeled as variables. The ground truths are modeled as a regularization term and its contribution to the source weight estimation can be controlled by a parameter. The experiments show that the proposed method is more accurate and efficient than the existing truth discovery methods
Network segregation in a model of misinformation and fact checking
Misinformation under the form of rumor, hoaxes, and conspiracy theories
spreads on social media at alarming rates. One hypothesis is that, since social
media are shaped by homophily, belief in misinformation may be more likely to
thrive on those social circles that are segregated from the rest of the
network. One possible antidote is fact checking which, in some cases, is known
to stop rumors from spreading further. However, fact checking may also backfire
and reinforce the belief in a hoax. Here we take into account the combination
of network segregation, finite memory and attention, and fact-checking efforts.
We consider a compartmental model of two interacting epidemic processes over a
network that is segregated between gullible and skeptic users. Extensive
simulation and mean-field analysis show that a more segregated network
facilitates the spread of a hoax only at low forgetting rates, but has no
effect when agents forget at faster rates. This finding may inform the
development of mitigation techniques and overall inform on the risks of
uncontrolled misinformation online

Passively Q-switched Yb : YAG laser with Cr4+: YAG as the saturable absorber
By using a continuous-wave Ti:sapphire laser as a pumping source, we demonstrated a passively Q-switched Yb:YAG laser at room temperature with Cr4+:YAG as the saturable absorber. We achieved an average output power of as much as 55 mW at 1.03 mum with a pulse width (FWHM) as short as 350 ns. The initial transmission of the Cr4+:YAG has an effect on the pulse duration (FWHM) and the repetition rate of the Yb:YAG passively Q-switched laser. The Yb:YAG crystal can be a most promising passively Q-switched laser crystal for compact, efficient, solid-state lasers. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America
Search for K_S K_L in psi'' decays
K_S K_L from psi'' decays is searched for using the psi'' data collected by
BESII at BEPC, the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be
B(psi''--> K_S K_L) < 2.1\times 10^{-4} at 90% C. L. The measurement is
compared with the prediction of the S- and D-wave mixing model of the
charmonia, based on the measurements of the branching fractions of J/psi-->K_S
K_L and psi'-->K_S K_L.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width
values do not match with those of any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics
Solvothermal Synthesis and Characterization of Chalcopyrite CuInSe2 Nanoparticles
The ternary I-III-VI2 semiconductor of CuInSe2 nanoparticles with controllable size was synthesized via a simple solvothermal method by the reaction of elemental selenium powder and CuCl as well as InCl3 directly in the presence of anhydrous ethylenediamine as solvent. X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy characterization confirmed that CuInSe2 nanoparticles with high purity were obtained at different temperatures by varying solvothermal time, and the optimal temperature for preparing CuInSe2 nanoparticles was found to be between 180 and 220 Ā°C. Indium selenide was detected as the intermediate state at the initial stage during the formation of pure ternary compound, and the formation of copper-related binary phase was completely deterred in that the more stable complex [Cu(C2H8N2)2]+ was produced by the strong N-chelation of ethylenediamine with Cu+. These CuInSe2 nanoparticles possess a band gap of 1.05 eV calculated from UVāvis spectrum, and maybe can be applicable to the solar cell devices
Development of a new marker system for identifying the complex members of the low-molecular-weight glutenin subunit gene family in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
Low-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GSs) play an important role in determining the bread-making quality of bread wheat. However, LMW-GSs display high polymorphic protein complexes encoded by multiple genes, and elucidating the complex LMW-GS gene family in bread wheat remains challenging. In the present study, using conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with conserved primers and high-resolution capillary electrophoresis, we developed a new molecular marker system for identifying LMW-GS gene family members. Based on sequence alignment of 13 LMW-GS genes previously identified in the Chinese bread wheat variety Xiaoyan 54 and other genes available in GenBank, PCR primers were developed and assigned to conserved sequences spanning the length polymorphism regions of LMW-GS genes. After PCR amplification, 17 DNA fragments in Xiaoyan 54 were detected using capillary electrophoresis. In total, 13 fragments were identical to previously identified LMW-GS genes, and the other 4 were derived from unique LMW-GS genes by sequencing. This marker system was also used to identify LMW-GS genes in Chinese Spring and its group 1 nulliātetrasomic lines. Among the 17 detected DNA fragments, 4 were located on chromosome 1A, 5 on 1B, and 8 on 1D. The results suggest that this marker system is useful for large-scale identification of LMW-GS genes in bread wheat varieties, and for the selection of desirable LMW-GS genes to improve the bread-making quality in wheat molecular breeding programmes
